International Programs

In 1981, the first overseas students participated, as the Centre’s work became known outside Australia.

American high school students started coming in 1986, during the American mid-year summer break. Over 500 American students per year attended our six and eight day programs as part of the Centre’s Australia-wide 24 day Australian Experience Program. (See Program Details).

The Japanese student program commenced in 1988 on three to five day programs, and average 300 students per year.

See our international contacts if you are interested in discussing the programs with the local coordinators in your country.

Student Programs

Trial programs from 1975 to 1980 showed that students who were not performing as well as expected in the normal in-school environment responded quite differently to the same subjects when they were presented in their normal habitat in the centre's incomparable "living classroom". Textbooks and projected images then became the important support and backup systems, used in pre and post briefings and fieldwork .

The program was initially created for senior primary (junior high) level because of the importance of these years in providing a more knowledgeable foundation and preparedness for students so as to enable them to better handle secondary level subjects, but was extended and promoted to senior high levels in 1981.

Adult Programs

American Adult Programs

Special Adult Programs started in 1985, with the commencement of the American Elder Hostel program, based in Boston Massachusetts. These groups are on Kangaroo Island for 6 to 7 days, as part of their Australian segment.

Japanese Adult Programs

These began in 1988 and involve mostly 3 day stays because of the limited time allowed in Japanese itineraries.

International 'Post Grad' Special Field Study Programs

These special programs commenced in 1991, arranged between the Australian Government and the Governments of the countries involved. These students are in Australia, carrying out post graduate studies, and come from 21 different overseas countries.
